What are the short-comings of Plastics?

SHORTCOMINGS OF PLASTIC

Though the plastics have found a wider application range, plastics do have some shortcomings. These are….
1. Lower Melting point and low heat resistance: Most of the plastics have low melting point and, have low heat resistance.  Due to this, hot liquids/hot foods cannot be stored. Also plastic articles are needed to be protected form hot materials or fire.
2. Lower Hardness: The plastics are not that hard and have low scratch resistance.
3. Gradual disintegration: The plastics gradually disintegrate and become dull over a period of time. This disintegration is due to atmospheric effects of sun, rain, wind and temperature variations.  Due to this disintegration, the luster of surface finish is lost and the article looses its attractive appearance.
4. Creep: The plastics exhibit high creep. In other words, plastics deform due to frequent loads it sustains.
5. Thermal expansion: The coefficient of thermal expansion for plastics is high and due to this, moderate temperature variations will affect the size and shape of articles.
