LAMINATE
Laminate is a thin sheet which is
pasted on plywood surfaces to improve the appearance, abrasion resistance,
durability and to simplify cleaning. The thickness of these sheets, used in
furniture construction, is normally 1mm or 1.5mm. However, laminates with
thicknesses from 0.6 mm to 3mm are also available.
The manufacturing process of
laminate can be briefly explained as follows. Five or seven brown/craft papers
duly impregnated by resin are pressed on a Pressing machine with a design
paper. The design paper is a ready printed paper duly melamine coated and is on
the top of the brown papers. With five brown papers 1mm thick laminate is made
and with 7 papers it will be 1.5 mm thick. The pressing is hot-pressing. After
the pressing, the back side of the laminated is sanded to make it a bit uneven.
This uneven surface becomes a key for adhesive to hold the laminate on pasting.
Then the laminate is trimmed to size and is sent to dispatch after necessary
stamping.

The decorative face of the ‘Glossy Laminate’
is smooth and glossy.
The
decorative face of the ‘Mat Finish Laminate’ is smooth and mat i. e.
non-glossy. The surface finish of the ‘Suede Laminate’ is mat and suede i.
e. with minute beaded/knurled texture. The ‘Textured Laminate’ has surface
textured like python leather or some other texture depending upon the design on
the sheet. ‘Metallic laminate’ has thin metal surface on the face instead of design
paper. The metal could be silver, copper, bronze, gold etc. The decorative face of Supergloss laminate is more glossy than normal glossy laminate and has a better scratch resistance. Supergloss laminates are in plain colours and do not have a design or figure on them.
The paper, on all the non-metallic
laminates, has a wide range of designs which include plain colours, geometric
patterns, abstract modes, stone finishes or veneer patterns. Metallic laminate
will obviously have only metal colour but the finish could be glossy, mat or
brush finish.

can laminates paste in solid wood , is it advisable ?
ReplyDeleteLaminate can be pasted on solid wood, but it is not advisable. Timber absorbs or releases moisture depending upon the season. In rainy season, it absorbs moisture and swells. In summer, it releases moisture to the atmosphere and shrinks. Synthetic adhesive (Fevicol)dissolves in water. The surface contraction/expansion and the dissolution of adhesive may affect to peeling out the laminate from the surface.

ReplyDeleteI have personally used 1mm Decorative Laminates from Advance Decorative Laminates. The laminate is very tough/durable, the colour and texture is amazing. Also, the laminate sheet cost is very affordable.
