What are the advantages of a particleboard over plywood?
ANS:
a] Particle board is eco-friendly as it utilizes
the wastes like roots & branches, small plantations, grass, sugarcane
bagasses etc. Thus, it saves the nature since the trees are not felled.
b] Particle boards are termite resistant since
these do not have air cavities for termites to lay eggs.
c] No peeling of veneers
in particleboard which can happen in plywood.
d] Particle board is
cheaper than plywood by about 10 to 15 %.
e] Particle board is
available in size up to 12’x 9’ where as the maximum size of ply is about 8’ x
4’.
f] Particle board can have better sound
insulation properties when random half perforated holes are created in these.
g] Particle Board can be made from grass, sugarcane bagasses etc which are
available every six months. Whereas, plywood is to be manufactured from grown
up trees that need at least 20 years for maturity. Hence raw material supply
for particle board is faster. 
This is surprising! Usually people dont want to use particle board especially in kitchen. If we buy quality plywood like greenply this should be taken care.

It has been a long time since I have dealt with plywood. I wonder if it would look good for flooring. It would be interesting to have it for walls and floors. http://www.famitchell.com.au/
ReplyDeletePlywood or an alike 'timber sheet product' is used for walls in Earth-quake prone areas. In India we normally have brick walls. In India, we normally have flooring of stone or ceramic tiles. In case we have to run heater ducts or AC ducts, we run these through false ceiling. In US these ducts are through false flooring, at least in earth-quake prone areas. Hence the pseudo floor is of timber. If flooring is covered by carpet, then a 12mm or .5" plywood would be adequate.
